Casino & Gaming Industry

The recent economic climate has rendered the casino and gaming industry a particularly volatile environment. Porzio has become well-known for our bankruptcy and restructuring expertise in this rapidly evolving industry. Our expertise ranges from the representation of casino resorts in bankruptcy filings, liquidation and restructuring matters, to displaced casino amenity tenants.

In addition to our wide range of complementary practice areas – including Real Estate, Land Use & DevelopmentEnvironmental Law and Employment & Labor – Porzio also features the unique advantage of access to Porzio Governmental Affairs, LLC ("PGA"), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the firm. PGA is one of the New Jersey's leading lobbying firms, consistently ranked within the top five firms of the state, and experts in the New Jersey gaming industry. This unique relationship affords the Bankruptcy & Financial Restructuring Team accessibility and visibility with State Government that few others have been able to achieve.

Barbara DeMarco, Vice President of Porzio Governmental Affairs, LLC ("PGA"), is a Governmental Affairs Consultant specializing in state gaming issues and legislation.

Ms. DeMarco has seen over 3 dozen gaming related bills signed into law since she began working on these issues in 1997. In July 2014, Governor Christie signed into law a bill Barbara had introduced to allow for independent data centers in Atlantic City to house I-Gaming equipment. In 2011, She engineered the passage of a law permitting exchange wagering on horses over the internet, making NJ the second state in the US to legalize this form of gaming. Her first major victory was the passage of the constitutional referendum and the enabling legislation that permitted off-track wagering and account deposit wagering.

Ms. DeMarco has authored articles, OP ED’s and guest columns on gaming and racing. She also is widely quoted on the "state of gaming" in the US. Since 2013, she has been listed on Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg's "Power List" of the most powerful and influential women in Trenton.
