Business Development Manager

Porzio, Bromberg & Newman, P.C. ("Porzio"), is a highly-respected, well-established and expanding law firm with two subsidiary companies and offices in NJ, NY, MA, DE, PA, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Porzio is looking for a dynamic and experienced individual to assume the role of Business Development Manager. The Business Development Manager will serve as the lead for assigned groups on business development strategies and tactics that attract new clients and bring differentiating value and solutions to the firm’s key client and prospect relationships. This individual will report to the Director of Marketing &
Business Development and collaborate with group leadership, other BDMs, and the marketing team. Their chief responsibilities are to develop, lead and oversee business development initiatives. A paramount role of this position is to be a valued business development partner, idea generator, “dot connector” and coach.

The ideal candidate will work to further Porzio's brand recognition, to strengthen and expand the Firm’s client base, to increase revenue generation through effective and intentional business development strategies, and to work with Firm leadership to develop new products and services to increase market share.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Serve as a strategic leader for assigned groups by proactively identifying and pursuing highvalue, high-probability business development opportunities with new and existing clients.
  • Drive development and execution of the group's and Firm's key client growth and strategic plans.
  • Actively participate with the Business Development Team—helping to advance firm-wide growth and cross-selling goals.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of practice areas and attorney specialties, in support of better communications and client retention and development efforts.
  • Formulate client acquisition strategies at the individual attorney and group levels.
  • Perform detailed competitive intelligence analysis and opportunity assessments and make pursuit recommendations.
  • Implement one-on-one sales coaching and pitch strategy meetings to optimize new business pursuits and promote business development best practices.
  • Make appropriate introductions to your network and contacts to grow client relationships.
  • Participate in client pitches and meetings as needed.
  • Participate in strategic planning activities regarding the evaluation and improvement of present attorney/client services and future business development opportunities and activities.
  • Promote collaboration and networking in business development and cross-marketing initiatives within the Firm, including marketing department specialists, attorneys and practice groups.
  • Continual review to improve data mining, metrics and reporting of attorney/client relationships and attorney and Firm profiles.
  • Serve as key contact in responses to RFPs, proposals, questionnaires, award submissions and other client driven requests for information about attorneys, the Firm and its practices.
  • Develop and oversee effective internal and external business development training programs in marketing and client relationships for attorneys.
  • Draft marketing collateral and business development content for use in client pitches and proposals, and recruitment material leveraging a strong knowledge of the Firm’s capabilities and value proposition.
  • Identify and coordinate opportunities to publicize Firm achievements through press releases, interviews, and integrated marketing and business development campaigns.
  • Monitor news and industry activity and synthesize competitive intelligence to inform strategy.
  • Assist in design and circulation of targeted thought leadership to clients.
  • Conduct financial analysis of client revenue to guide strategy around client relationships.
  • Proactively identify trends in relationship growth, opportunities to introduce new teams and services to cross-sell, and measure ROI on client activities and investments.
  • Seek meaningful ways to partner with clients beyond day-to-day legal work, including charitable, community service and pro bono initiatives.
  • Identify firm clients for whom lateral principals can add value and coordinate introductions through client relationship principal.
  • Co-network with attorneys at industry events and conferences.
  • Work with assigned groups to forecast, draft, and implement the annual operating budgets while serving as a good steward of Firm resources.
  • Monitor and report on policies, procedures and best practices, in conjunction with the rules of professional conduct as set forth by the states’ bar where we conduct business, and in coordination with general counsel of Firm.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, marketing, public relations, business or a similar field. JD or MBA is a plus.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of experience in professional services business development and marketing. Past law firm experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead initiatives and work with other team members and beyond while gaining buy-in from attorneys.
  • Excellent relationship building capabilities. Ability to build rapport and trust with senior executives at the firm and clients.
  • Strong project management, leadership, coaching, analytical and supervisory skills.
  • Experience in budgeting and budget management.
  • Must be able to lead but also be a “roll-up-your-sleeves” team player.
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects while prioritizing work assignments.
  • Ability to work well with attorneys and personnel at all levels.
  • Ability to handle and maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to manage expectations.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as necessary and when required to firm offices, client locations, firm events, professional conferences, etc.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including after regular business hours and on weekends.
  • Ability to work independently and under own direction and initiative.
  • Proficient in the following systems/applications:
    • Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams);
    • Social media platforms including, but not limited to, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook;
    • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems and email marketing systems;
    • Other marketing tools including MailChimp, Constant Contact, Survey Monkey, QR code creators etc.;
    • Document management systems.
  • Must be an excellent problem solver with strong attention to detail.
