Appellate Court Rules in Favor of Porzio Client Woodcliff Lake

7/21/2017

Porzio client Woodcliff Lake was featured in an article in The Record, "Appeals Court: Woodcliff Lake Can Pursue Vote on Pascack Valley Withdrawal," by Sarah Nolan, on July 21, 2017.

A state appellate court has ruled that Woodcliff Lake can ask residents to vote whether or not the borough should withdraw from the Pascack Valley Regional High School District. Woodcliff Lake has asserted for years that it is trapped in a district with an unfair funding formula. They seek instead to enter into a send-receive relationship with the district, which would allow the borough to pay tuition on a per-pupil basis rather than pay taxes based on equalized property values, as it currently does.

The Pascack Valley Regional High School District accepts students from River Vale, Hillsdale, Montvale and Woodcliff Lake. All four towns would participate in the special election.

Porzio principal Kerri A. Wright represents Woodcliff Lake in the matter. Stated Ms. Wright, the ruling is "intended to provide a community with the right to ask its voters to decide how its children are educated and its tax dollars are spent.”
