Paralegal

Porzio, Bromberg & Newman, P.C., a full service law seeks a Full-time, Non-Exempt Paralegal to join its Bankruptcy team. Bankruptcy Paralegals are responsible for managing complex matters and/or complex projects and work under the direct supervision of an attorney. Bankruptcy Paralegals are expected to perform at a high level of productivity, effectiveness and competence.             

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Act as liaison between Judge's chambers, court personnel, outside counsel, clients, and other parties via telephone, mail, and/or email.
  2. Prepare petitions, schedules and statement of financial affairs, and have working knowledge of Bestcase and related platforms in preparation for bankruptcy filings.
  3. Prepare court documents, which may include notices of appearance, pro hac vice applications, proofs of claim, agendas, plans and disclosure statements, other motions and objections, adversary complaints, answers, draft discovery requests and responses to discovery requests.
  4. Working understanding of state and federal court bankruptcy processes and procedures for relevant jurisdictions. 
  5. Review, revise and prepare monthly, interim and/or final fee applications in conformance with applicable local bankruptcy rules.
  6. Communicate and respond to requests from the Office of the United States Trustee in regards to fee and/or employment applications.
  7. Assist attorneys with coordination of large and complex conflict check reviews as related to Debtor and Committee work.
  8. Analysis of pleadings and/or other filings, including claims reconciliation in anticipation of objections and/or distributions.
  9. Prepare ordinary course and new value defense analyses and related settlement communications in regards to avoidance actions. 
  10. Compile, prepare and summarize relevant materials for use by attorneys in all phases of bankruptcy or restructuring matters.
  11. E-File documents with court using CM/ECF and all related platforms, and serve (or coordinate service) as appropriate.
  12. Assist with business and client development efforts, including with respect to Committee matters, which will include a review and analysis of firm connections, potential conflicts, and preparation of pitch materials, as well as PACER searches for any current-client bankruptcy work.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. College degree required; paralegal certification preferred but not required.
  2. At least three (3) years of experience as a paralegal in the bankruptcy and restructuring field preferred.
  3. Demonstrated initiative, ability to handle caseload, and ability to represent firm in a professional manner.
  4. Strong verbal, written, analytical, organizational, technology and interpersonal skills.
  5. Ability to use office equipment, such as computer, copier, calculator, fax machine and multi-extension telephone.
  6. Flexibility in daily work schedule to meet firm's needs during periods of heavy workload.
