Porzio Principal Roy Alan Cohen Takes Office as Chair of the ABA Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section
Porzio, Bromberg & Newman, P.C. Principal, Roy Alan Cohen, was inducted as Chair of the American Bar Association's Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) at its Annual Meeting in Chicago on Sunday, August 5, 2018. Mr. Cohen served as Vice-Chair and Chair-Elect over the last two years and on the governing Council for the preceding three years. He has been Chair of the Content Management Committee, Long Range Planning Committee, and Membership Committee during this time and previously served in a host of prominent leadership roles in the organization over the last 30 years.
TIPS is one of the largest sections in the ABA and the largest group in America focusing exclusively on tort law, trial practice, and insurance-related matters. It is the only organization of its kind, bringing together almost 18,000 of the nation’s top plaintiff and defense attorneys, corporate legal decision-makers and in-house counsel, the judiciary, government lawyers and many others with relevant interest. TIPS has long been known for its thought leadership, scholarly publications, practical insights, and the presentation of leading national CLE programs in its areas of concentration, with highly regarding programs in the areas of Aviation, Commercial Vehicles, Motor Vehicle Product Liability, Toxic Torts, Fidelity & Surety Law, and Insurance Coverage to name a few. Its newer committees focusing on Animal Law, Cannabis Law and Policy, Cybersecurity & Data Privacy, and Pharmaceutical, Medical Device & Biosciences are fast becoming leaders in their respective areas of concentration. The programs presented by the 34 general substantive law committees which continue to add to TIPS stature in the legal community for the last 85 years.
Mr. Cohen is a senior Principal in the Litigation Group with almost 40 years of experience litigating and trying a wide variety of product liability, toxic tort, construction, environmental contamination, professional liability, premises liability, automotive and trucking, class action, and business litigation matters. He leads trial teams in New Jersey and New York, often working collaboratively with other lawyers around the country as a virtual law firm. Mr. Cohen serves as national, regional and local counsel to foreign and domestic clients and their lawyers and is outside general counsel to a number of companies. He has been recognized by peers in numerous professional organizations in which he has served, including as Chair of the International Association of Defense Counsel’s Toxic and Hazardous Substances Committee, Chair of the TIPS Commercial Transportation Litigation Committee, Self-Insurers and Risk Managers Committee, and Products Liability Committee, National Programs, and Task Force on Corporate Counsel Involvement, and the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Product Liability and Toxic Tort Section. He is a member of the Product Liability Advisory Council, the Litigation Counsel of America, and the Trucking Industry Defense Association. Mr. Cohen has been recognized in Best Lawyers in America, Top Attorneys in New Jersey by New Jersey Monthly, and in New Jersey Super Lawyers in various categories for more than 10 years, and has been certified and recertified six times since 1987 by the Supreme Court of New Jersey Board on Trial Certification as a Civil Trial Attorney. He served on the faculty of the International Association of Defense Counsel's prestigious Trial Academy at Stanford Law School in 2013 and is a frequent author and lecturer on litigation and trial subjects.
