David Carlson and John Oroho were announced as the recipients of the prestigious New Jersey Legal Awards, Innovator of the Year for their historic sale of Porzio Life Sciences (PLS). The annual awards recognize outstanding legal professionals who have demonstrated excellence, leadership, and significant contributions to the legal community.

David Carlson, who joined Porzio in 2021, played a pivotal role in negotiating the sale of its life sciences compliance technology subsidiary PLS to private equity buyers, RL Datix. Serving as the firm's in-house counsel, Carlson guided the deal and facilitated ongoing collaboration between the firm and PLS post-closing. In addition to his role as in-house counsel, he serves as co-chair of the firm’s Corporate Group, where he uses his in-house background to provide practical solutions.

John Oroho's innovation began when he utilized excess capacity at Porzio to create a regulatory database for the life sciences market. Over two decades, this idea blossomed into PLS, one of the first alternative legal service providers, which was later sold to RL Datix, marking a groundbreaking achievement for a U.S.-based law firm. Oroho's vision and development of PLS provided a comprehensive solution for pharmaceutical companies, consolidating state laws on medication distribution, compliance, and reporting in one place and eventually expanding into a global system for international regulations. He currently serves as Of Counsel to Porzio and is a member of the board of Porzio Compliance Services. He is also the President and General Manager at Porzio Life Sciences, an RLDatix company.

As part of the New Jersey Law Journal’s coverage of all “Innovator of the Year” finalists, both Carlson and Oroho were profiled leading up to the award ceremony on September 13, 2023.
